What is MATHCOUNTS?
MATHCOUNTS is a national math enrichment, coaching
and competition program for middle school
students. In existence for over 23 years,
MATHCOUNTS is one of the most successful education
partnerships involving middle school students,
educators, corporate sponsors and volunteers.
Georgia
MATHCOUNTS
The Georgia MATHCOUNTS competition is
presented by
the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers (GSPE).
With a decline in students entering college to
major in Engineering and/or Technology fields, the
GSPE has become a strong advocate and host of the
Georgia MATHCOUNTS to encourage students at the
middle school level to strive for excellence in
math and science. Enjoying the thrill and
excitement of these core academic classes at the
middle school level will lay the ground work for
youth to recognize the importance of math and
science as they mature into young adults making
career choices.
Sponsors and Volunteers
With the financial
support from organizations, individuals, and
corporate sponsors Georgia MATHCOUNTS has been an
enormous success.
"Shell is pleased to support MATHCOUNTS. This
program fits perfectly with Shell's strategy to
support promising students as they pursue
innovative projects with an underlying emphasis
on math and science. These skills are extremely
important to many occupations at Shell. As the
number of engineering and geosciences graduates
diminishes, it becomes even more important to
encourage students to begin building their math
and science skills at an early age."
John Hofmeister
President
Shell Oil Company
Engineers, educators, and individuals from various
professional careers dedicate their time and
knowledge to ensure that the Georgia MATHCOUNTS
continues to be an outstanding program.
How
Do I Participate In Georgia MATHCOUNTS?
To qualify for the
Georgia MATHCOUNTS, mathletes first compete in
their local area to qualify for the state
competition. The top winning teams and
individuals from their local competitions then
advance to the Georgia MATHCOUNTS. Advancing to
the state competition secures a chance for the
mathelete to advance to the National MATHCOUNTS.
