Get Involved:
Local
Chapters
The Chapter is the local unit that carries out the
purposes and programs of the State and National
Society. If you are a member of the NSPE, you are
a member of a local Chapter. It is at the Chapter
meetings and Chapter sponsored events that
networking, programs, and community involvement
occur.
Each Chapter has its own web page on the GSPE web
site, where you can find out the who to contact in
the Chapter Leadership for more information,
Chapter meeting dates and locations, and
opportunities for you to become involved.
Engineers Week
Engineers and technology professionals
interact with elementary, middle and high school
students to share their career experiences and to
promote engineering as a career choice.
Future City
The Future City Competition is a national program
sponsored by the engineering community to promote
technological literacy and engineering to middle
school students. Volunteers are needed for the
schools and 30 Judges are needed for the day of
the event. Please contact Dawn
Ramsey at SPSU
MATHCOUNTS
The Georgia MATHCOUNTS competition is
sponsored by the Georgia Society of Professional
Engineers and is made possible through financial
support provided by corporate and private
donations.
Numerous individuals volunteer countless hours to
make this program a success, and the State
competition will be the culmination of months of
hard work for volunteers, coaches, mathletes and
parents alike.
Critical
Infrastructure/Homeland Security Task Force
The NSPE Critical Infrastructure/Homeland Security
Task Force (CIHSTF) supports and promotes the
cause of critical infrastructure protection and
national security, while assuring the sound and
ethical practice of professional engineering. Its
mission, being fulfilled through a coordinated
network of multidisciplinary engineering entities
and individual P.E.s, is to consider three
specific areas of homeland security:
Physical
infrastructure protection against natural and
man-made threats
Codes and standards development
Academic training of future homeland security
workers
Gordon H.
Terwillegar, P.E. (Atlanta Metro Chapter) is
serving his third term on the the NSPE Critical
Infrastructure/Homeland Security Task Force, and
also represents the GSPE on the Facility
Resilience Committee of the Georgia Office of
Homeland Security. Several state Societies have
formed engineering Task Forces on Homeland
Security, and Gordon would like to establish one
in Georgia. If you are interested in contributing
your professional expertise and volunteer your
time to support either the NSPE or State of
Georgia homeland security efforts, please contact
Gordon H. Terwillegar, P.E. (770-205-4900).
Engineering The Future
Brochure (11” by 17” two sided color
tri-fold)
This color brochure uses text and photographs to
introduce engineering to middle school students.
In question and answer format the brochure covers
a definition of engineering, what engineers do,
the different engineering disciplines, the impact
on engineering on society, and an explanation of
professional engineering registration. The photos
were selected to engage students’ interest and to
illustrate the result of engineering in areas that
may not have occurred to the students. The goal
was to have the students react with, “I didn’t
think of that”, and “I want to do that”.
